Whether you patio is Siliceous stone like granite and slate (hard and durable), or Calcareous stone like marble, canter, travertine and limestone (porous and soft), they require care to maintain their beautiful look, especially in the heat of the Arizona summer. It is important to use the proper cleaning and sealing products. If not done correctly, it could compromise the durability and beauty of your stonework.
To help you with this, here are 3 steps to help you maintain your exterior patio stone in Arizona:
1. CLEAN – Consistently clean patio removing debris with a broom and also hose with water occasionally. The debris can deteriorate and stain the surface. If the staining cannot be removed easily, you may need a stronger product. Be sure to consult a professional, and/or read all directions carefully, before using cleaning solutions. Using a pH-neutral stone cleaner will provide your best result. Be certain to thoroughly rinse cleaning solutions from the stone – DO NOT LEAVE SOLUTION TO DRY ON STONE. Always clean the tile with a non abrasive brush, as metal brushes can scratch surfaces easily!
2. SEAL – Weather will also affect your stone, especially in the heat of the Arizona summer months It may fade or stain over time, losing it’s luster. The luster can be resurfaced by using a stone enhancer. Be sure to choose an enhancer with a built-in sealer to add stain resistance. Sealing outdoor stone surfaces should be done ever other year or more if needed, which will protect the stone from staining and slow down the general wear and tear.
3. MAINTAIN – High traffic areas will need consistent sealing for added protection. Patio furniture should have proper foot pegs to prevent scratches and other damage to the stone.
